Eat well
Throughout history the human race has been fascinated with food. It has
been a symbol of affluence, a symbol of lust and a symbol of sin.
Regardless of our perceptions, food is basically our fuel. We eat to grow,
to live and to work.
Our
problems start when we displace our goals, and instead of eating to live,
we live to eat. Many people put food in the center of their lives, and
food becomes a reward, a comfort, a goal. We can make every effort to eat
healthy, to eat good food, but, if food is in the center of our lives we
cannot be healthy.
Food
is a fuel and the only purpose it has is to give us the right amount and
right quality of energy.
It
is very simple to be healthy by eating good food if we keep this statement
on our mind.
Compare
yourself to your car. You go to a gas station and fill up. You go again
when you notice that your tank is almost empty. You don’t go every 2
hours (for a little snack), and you don’t fill additional jugs of
gasoline in your trunk (because it feels good).
Like
your car, you need to fill up and go until you are empty. Overeating any
food will make you ill, because you are asking your body to carry around
something it does not need. No wonder you feel tired.
It
is also very important to take the right quality of fuel. You will not
take your car to a gas station if you know that they add water to the
gasoline. Why would you give your body food that has artificial
flavorings, refined sugars, hydrogenated oils. You must remember that you
will get from your body, only what you put in it. If you put in bad fuel,
you will be tired. You also must remember to get out of your body as much
energy as you put in. You must use up your fuel before refueling.
Many
people will say that they know all this, but good food is expensive. That
is true, but going back to your car, you will not go to a gas station with
bad quality gasoline, and you buy a new car every 4 to 8 years. Yet, you
will go to a fast food restaurant, though you have only one body for a
lifetime. Where is the logic in that?
Some
people will say that they can’t control themselves because food is their
comfort. Let’s go to your car one more time. You buy a car for a
purpose, and what ever that purpose may be you expect that car to perform.
If you bought your car to take you to work, it better start in the
morning, or it is going to a shop, or eventually to a dump. You have a
purpose in life too, and it is not to sit in front of the TV with a bag of
chips. You better get off the couch, find your purpose and give all you
have to fulfill it, or you may just end up in a dump.
To
sum up: Eat good quality food, eat only when you are hungry, and get a
life.
The
difficult part of this problem is determining what is a good quality food.
In today’s profit driven society, food manufacturers are forced to sell
a lot and sell it cheap to make money. To accomplish this they put a lot
of effort in advertisement. So you get a cheap “cardboard” in a shiny
box. Once you get ill from too much cardboard, pharmaceutical companies
will sell you an expensive pill to get you better. Since it is difficult
to go through all the shiny boxes to find out if there are any good ones,
it is best to avoid them altogether. The best food comes without a box:
Meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.
Few
simple rules:
It
is very important to buy fresh meat and fish and prepare it yourself.
There are very simple and easy ways to make meat and fish in 10 to 15
minutes.
You
should not have more than 8 oz. of meat or fish in any meal. These are
heavy foods and should be consumed in limited quantities.
Try
to buy organic meat. Conventional meat comes from animals raised on
hormones and treated with antibiotics. These substances are preserved in
meat and get absorbed by your body. This
will cause hormonal imbalance, and irresponsiveness to antibiotics.
The
best kind of fish is wild deep-sea fish. It contains the least amount of
mercury and highest amounts of vitamin A and omega 3 fatty acids.
Most
of your diet should consist of vegetables, especially green leafy
vegetables. These foods are very reach in vitamins and minerals, and will
not build up fat in your body regardless of the quantity you eat. At least
50% of the vegetables you eat in a day should be uncooked. Fruits, nuts,
and seeds are a quality addition to the vegetables, because they provide
proteins and amino acids. They will also provide an interesting taste and
texture to your vegetable dish.
Fruits,
nuts, and seeds should be consumed in limited quantities because they
contain lots of sugars and oils.
It
is important to eat good quality food, but it is even more important to
leave out foods that are bad for you. Bad foods are all foods that can’t
be found in nature, but have to be made by processing. Bad foods are all
processed sugars, all hydrogenated oils, all white flour, all enriched
flours, all artificial flavors, and all foods that contain them. Leaving
these foods out of your diet will do you more good than adding all the
healthy foods in the world.
